Coaches and parents spend countless hours trying to develop proper baseball fielding skills in their players and kids. The facts are though that very few players will ever develop the whole package, footwork, fast release, good lateral movement etc. Even in the major leagues there is often a noticeable difference in the defensive skills of some middle infielders and the rest of the field. Having coached for several years I made wooden gloves for my players every year and 100 percent of the time my best middle infielders were those that mastered the wooden gloves. However, there were still inherent obstacles when practicing with the wooden gloves.

Some proper fielding attempts would still deflect off the glove.

Wood isn't forgiving and the risk of injury was always present.

Because of that risk, we would need to greatly reduce practice speed.

Players were practicing with unfamiliar equipment.
